Environmental or Ecological approaches to behavior shift focus away from the individual and emphasize sociocultural and physical environment influences.  According to McLeroy the most effective interventions occur on multiple levels to :

1. intrapersonal factors

2. interpersonal and group factors

3. institutional factors

4. community factors

5. public policy  

Simons-Morto's model offers three levels (individual, organizational, and governmental) in four settings (schools, worksites, health care institutions and communities).

Examples of environment supports include; bike or walking paths, parks and policies or incentives for physical commutation.
